New pope continues old tradition

Pope Benedict XVI greets the faithful as his personal secretary, George Gaenswein, adjusts the microphone during the pontiff's first appearance of his papacy Sunday at the window of his apartment overlooking St. Peter's Square at the Vatican. In his address, the pope told thousands of people he was keeping up the cherished tradition of his predecessor, John Paul II, who had last appeared to crowds in St. Peter's Square in silent suffering. Before an audience of some 50,000 people, Benedict blessed the crowd, wished Orthodox Christians a happy Easter and said he hoped efforts toward Christian unity would continue.
