Grid clock is ticking

Tick tock. Tick tock. Tick tock.

Time is running out on the high school football season.

For gridiron teams in the wonderful wacky WPIAL, this is the last week of the regular season and there is much at stake.

There’s a lot at stake for yours truly as well.

Last week, I was tripped up just once, going 9-1 in the slate of games. Overall, I am 67-21 — not too shabby, but I’d like to get better.

On to the picks:

• Central Catholic 28, Butler 11 — The Golden Tornado are playoff bound for the first time since 1998 and will be shooting for their first winning season since 1997.

Beating Central Catholic is a tall order, but one that isn’t outside the realm of possibility.

• Seneca Valley 51, Fox Chapel 8 — The only thing in doubt in this one is how many touchdowns Forrest Barnes will add to his growing collection.

• Knoch 27, Highlands 11 — “Unleash the Bencat!”

The Knights’ offense has a whole new wrinkle with Ben Tackett taking snaps in the shotgun.

The “Bencat” had mixed results last week, but it’s one more thing opponents must prepare for.

• Mars 19, Hampton 18 — This one is for all the marbles in the Greater Allegheny Conference.

Both teams are 7-1 overall, 6-1 in the section. The winner can take a deep sigh and go into the playoffs as a high seed. The loser could drop all the way to fourth in the section and face a road game in the first round of the playoffs.

• Freeport 30, Summit Academy 12 — The Yellowjackets got steamrolled by Washington last week. You know Freeport will be looking to regain some swagger.

The Knights are going to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

• Slippery Rock 44, Oil City 21 — The Rockets are cruising into the District 10 Class AAA playoffs, but Oil City could be a tricky test. The Oilers have won three in a row after an 0-5 start.

• Karns City 24, Brookville 23 — Another game for all the marbles, the winner here wins the KSAC-Large.

Moniteau 23, Punxsutawney 21 — The Warriors are a different team with Dustin Geagan at quarterback.

• Union 41, Keystone 7 — The Golden Knights are winning games every which way — offense, defense, special teams.

That’s a good formula as Union readies for what should be a difficult District 9 Class A playoff bracket.

• Clarion 46, A-C Valley 13 — The Bobcats are getting better and better. So are the Falcons, but they just aren’t at Clarion’s level ... yet.

• Grove City 42, Sharon 12 — The Eagles don’t have a 10th game, so this is it for their regular season. The sad part is Grove City is staring at a second-place finish in the region and may have a tough draw in the first round of the pending playoffs.

That bye week may be just what the doctor ordered for the still banged up Eagles.

Scoop is ready and willing to hear the Saints’ bounty appeals.
