A competitor is unabashedly flippant during the annual Olney Pancake Race to mark Shrove Tuesday today in Olney, England. According to legend, the Olney race began on Shrove Tuesday in 1445. When Time magazine published a feature on the race in 1950, the town of Liberal, Kansas, challenged Olney to a friendly trans-Atlantic competition. It has been a rivalry ever since, and the event has turned into a four-day celebration in Liberal.
