Andrew Szakelyhidi
Andrew Szakelyhidi passed away on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024, after more than 101 years of a full and loving life.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Stella Mary Szakelyhidi. He is also survived by his three children and their spouses, Jeffrey and Susan Szakelyhidi of Harmony, Andrea and Steven Jensen of Delavan, Wis., and Betty-jean and Edward Bardella of Greenville.
Andrew “Andy” was born on Dec. 3, 1922, in Zelienople. He was one of seven children born to Hungarian immigrants, William and Suzan Bihary Szakelyhidi. Andy grew up as a star athlete in several sports before joining the U.S. Army during World War II after his graduation from Zelienople High School. He served until the end of the war, having spent part of his tour in the Normandy invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. He joined the Army Reserve after marrying Stella in 1950, and served as a master sergeant during the Korean conflict.
Andy and Stella built their home in Harmony, where they raised their family. He worked with his brother, Frank Szakelyhidi, in the HVAC business. He was active in Boy Scouts and a member of St. Peter’s Reformed Church of Zelienople. He and his family enjoyed trips to Lake Erie and many hikes and picnics in the Butler County area. He moved to Passavant Community in Zelienople in 2017 with Stella, and lived there until his passing.
Andy is also survived by his grandchildren, Amy, Daren, Jessica, Bethany, Sarah, Allison and Eddie; his great-grandchildren, Teagen, Blake, Trey, Turner, Zeke, Amelia, Vera, Savannah, Owen, Audrey, Sebastian, Andrew Basil and Jonah.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Rose Braham and Elizabeth (Bill) Kennedy; and his brothers, Frank, Bertram, William Jr. and Joseph.
SZAKELYHIDI — Visitation for family and friends of Andrew Szakelyhidi, who died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024, will be held between 1 and 2:30 p.m. Saturday at BOYLAN FUNERAL HOME, 324 E. Grandview Ave., Zelienople, next to the church.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at St. Peter’s Reformed Church, 320 E. Grandview Ave., Zelienople, with the Rev. David Bordy officiating.
