Women's health fair returns

Event Oct. 17 at Clearview

CENTER TOWNSHIP — An annual women’s health and wellness fair will be held Oct. 17 at Clearview Mall.

Organizer Cheryl Schaefer of the Butler Breast Cancer and Women’s Canter Support Group said the fair, which will feature more than 30 vendors, will be in Center Court from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The fair has been an annual gathering for more than 10 years, Schaefer said.

This year it will feature some new vendors, including physicians specializing in women’s care and members of a Buddhist sanctuary that offers therapeutic yoga classes.

Schaefer said members of the Jesus Datta Retreat Center, which teaches Kriya Yoga, will attend. The yoga is “the science of breath and meditation.”

“It’s like stress-relieving yoga,” Schaefer said, adding that the center has been in existence for about 80 years and is in West Sunbury.

Many of the vendors will provide visitors with information about services and treatment options, Schaefer said, including groups like Visiting Angels of Kittanning, a visiting nurse and hospice service that recently expanded its offerings to the Butler County area.

Other groups, like Creative Hair Solutions, are mainstays at the event, Schaefer said. The company offers hats and wigs for cancer patients, and will be available to show patients how to tie head scarves and offer other fashion advice and services like wig fittings.

Schaefer said that for those people interested in services, “there will be a lot of women’s imaging” at the fair. In the past the fair has included services like bone density imaging and massage therapy stations.

This year visitors will be able to take advantage of testing by Pittsburgh-based Body Beautiful Medi-Spa, which works with varicose veins. Schaefer said chiropractors also will offer spinal alignment checks for visitors. There will be a lung health station offering services.

The fair also includes alternative approaches to health services, and includes a Reiki practitioner from the Yama Room and Wellness Center.

Reiki is a Japanese technique that is commonly known as palm healing.

The fair also includes a basket auction that Schaefer said always manages to surprise and dazzle with its variety.

“We never know what we’re going to get, but there’s always some really great baskets,” Schaefer said.

The money raised by the event goes to the Butler Breast Cancer and Women’s Cancer Support Group.

Schaefer said she hopes more than just women attend. After all, she added, the fair may be called the women’s health and wellness fair, but there’s information for children and men as well.
