Good Samaritan credited with helping crash victim

JACKSON TWP — When police arrived at an accident Wednesday morning, a good Samaritan had already applied a tourniquet to the victim’s leg — and then seemingly disappeared and was nowhere to be found.

Jackson Township Police Sgt. Tim Amrhein said the driver of a southbound sedan driving on Mercer Road failed to see a motorcycle headed west on Little Creek Road. The sedan allegedly pulled into the intersection and caused an accident.

Police arrived at the scene around 7:45 a.m. By then, the 64-year-old motorcyclist, whose name Amrhein did not immediately release, had a tourniquet on his severely broken right leg, according to Amrhein.

However, Amrhein said the investigating officer was unable to determine who applied the tourniquet, but said it appeared to have been put on properly. The officer continued his investigation and waited for medics to arrive.

The motorcyclist was taken to UPMC Passavant in Cranberry with injuries to the right side of his body in addition to the broken leg. He was later transported by helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital.
