SLIPPERY ROCK — Kids and parents in the Slippery Rock area got a chance to purchase and decorate their own pumpkin for $5 last Wednesday.

The event, which was sponsored by Slippery Rock Parks and Recreation, was held at Slippery Rock Park Recreation Center.

Sally Dugo, volunteer and activities coordinator for Slippery Rock Parks and Recreation, supervised the event.

The event was registration only. Dugo said 40 families registered for the event. There were 60 pumpkins available.

"We fill the room," Dugo said.

Three organizations from Slippery Rock University helped out at the event.

The event also included mask and cookie decorating.

Dugo had the event divided into two rooms, one for pumpkin decorating and the other for cookie decorating.

The pumpkin room can only accommodate 20 families at a time, so the people that came first were sent to the pumpkin room and the later arrivals were sent to the cookie room.

"Usually, everyone comes for the pumpkins first," Dugo said.

"It is a lot of fun; people really enjoy it," Dugo added.

Billie Fleeger brought her daughter Sarah, 10, to the event. This was their first time.

"It gives her something to do. It's an indoor activity and she's with friends," Fleeger said.

Cathy Brown said she found out about the event from a flyer that was sent home with her son, Zach, 6.

"It was something for him to do, something he would enjoy," Brown said.

Jessika White saw a flyer advertising the event in the park office and thought it would be good for her daughter Libby, 2.

"I think the program's great. I think it's organized and they (the volunteers) are prepared," White said.

Rachelle Luckock and her children, Nathaniel, 3, and Jenalise, 10 months, were sent to the cookie room first. She said she was surprised by the number of people at the event.

"It's kind of cool," Luckock said.

Although she is familiar with the park, Luckock said this was her first time coming to this event.
