TOKYO — Japan has marked the 66th anniversary of its surrender in World War II with somber remembrances across the country and a memorial in Tokyo led by the emperor.
Emperor Akihito, whose father made the unprecedented 1945 national radio address announcing the war could not be won, offered prayers for the dead and hopes for peace at today's memorial in Tokyo. Prime Minister Naoto Kan also attended.
The annual ceremonies cap a series of remembrances of the war's disastrous final months.
Gatherings are also held each year for the anniversaries of the bloody battle of Okinawa in June and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, both in early August.
ZAWIYA, Libya — Libyan rebels claimed Sunday they were trying to cut off two key supply routes to Moammar Gadhafi's stronghold in Tripoli after capturing more towns in the west of the country.The opposition fighters also battled government forces for control of the city of Zawiya, just 30 miles from the capital.The rebel advances over the past few days out of the western mountains marked the most significant gains after months of stalemate in the civil war.Col. Jumma Ibrahim, a rebel spokesman, said his fighters are moving closer to blocking major supply routes to Tripoli from the south and west.The routes are critical for moving food, fuel and weapons over land to the capital.
MADRID — A Spanish official says a killer bull has claimed another victim after goring to death a 29-year-old man during festivities in the eastern Valencia region.A regional government official says the man, whose name was not released, died at a hospital in the town of Xativa late Saturday.The 1,100-pound bull — named “Raton,” or mouse — has killed two other members of the public during festivals over 10 years. Because of Raton's fearsome reputation, his owners earn about $14,000 each time he appears at a festival.In Spain, many summer festivals highlight bull runs in streets or bullrings, where revelers can come close to the beasts.
