With another high school basketball season in the books, the sports staff is preparing to salute the Butler County area's finest by naming the Butler Eagle Basketball Honor Rolls, as well as the top players and coaches, for 2009-10.
The girls honorees will be published in the Wednesday edition of the Butler Eagle while the boys selections will appear Thursday.
Knoch High graduate and University of Michigan women's gymnastics star Natalie Beilstein won the vault title with a score of 9.9 at Saturday's Big Ten Conference Championship Meet, hosted by Ohio State University.The effort helped the Wolverines take home their fourth consecutive conference crown.Beilstein was also named Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
Slippery Rock High wrestler Forrest Christmann recently placed sixth in the 189-pound weight class at the 2010 National High School Coaches Association Tournament in Virginia Beach.Christmann advanced to the quarterfinals in the double-elimination event and was named a high school All-American for his efforts.
Former Butler High School pitchers Brian Warheit (Seton Hill) and Tim Geibel (Wheeling Jesuit) battled each other in a pitcher's dual Saturday.Warheit led the Griffins to a 2-0 win, giving up just six hits, striking out five and walking one in a complete game.Geibel surrendered just two runs on four hits, striking out five and walking one in 5Z\c innings pitched.
MARTINSVILLE, Va. — NASCAR's bad weather luck at Martinsville Speedway reared its head again Sunday as rain forced the postponed of the Sprint Cup race until Monday at noon.It is the second year in a row that rain pushed an event into the work week at the track in southwest Virginia.
