Butler man behind bars after assault with a smoking pipe
A Butler man remains behind bars on charges he repeatedly punched another man in the face while holding a smoking pipe in one of his hands, city police reported.
The alleged attack Thursday afternoon left the 52-year-old victim, also of Butler, bloodied and in need of hospital treatment for facial injuries, according to authorities.
Police arrested Julian A. Bindernagel, 25, who is charged with felony and misdemeanor assault. He is in the Butler County Prison on $25,000 bond.
A call about 3:35 p.m. for a fight sent officers to a building on East North Street that is used as a temporary, emergency shelter by the Center for Community Resources. Police said they found the alleged victim covered in blood and standing outside of the building.
They also found Bindernagel, who was subsequently detained.
During the investigation, officers learned the defendant and victim had gotten into a verbal argument that turned violent outside the building's front entrance, police said.
Charging documents allege Bindernagel punched the older man with both fists “while holding a smoking pipe in his left hand, which he used as a weapon to hit (the victim).”
Officers described the seized pipe as being covered in blood.
The alleged assault, police said, was captured on surveillance video.
The victim was taken by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital. The extent of his injuries was not known.
District Judge Wayne Seibel arraigned Bindernagel on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, disorderly conduct and harassment. His preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 25. Online court records did not indicate if he has an attorney.
