A Slippery Rock woman is facing felony insurance fraud and other charges for allegedly failing to disclose her extensive criminal record when she obtained an automobile policy in 2018.

Katherine J. Yova, 37, later filed a claim and received $2,800 for damages in an accident, authorities said.

Yova is to be formally arraigned May 7 in Butler County court on felony and misdemeanor counts of insurance fraud and a felony count of theft by deception.

The charges stem from an investigation by the state Office of Attorney General's Insurance Fraud Section that followed a one-vehicle accident Aug. 22, 2018.

Yova made a claim that same day with Erie Insurance, according to charging documents, and was paid $2,793 for damage to her vehicle.

Investigators subsequently learned that Yova had allegedly provided false information to Erie when she obtained the policy on May, 25, 2018, from an agent in Harrisville.

Specifically, documents said, she answered “no” when questioned if she had ever been arrested.

Yova, it turned out, had 30 prior arrests and 15 convictions, authorities said. One of those convictions, according to court records, was for felony insurance fraud in 2008.

Most of her convictions, records showed, were for bad checks and theft by deception.

A special investigator for Erie advised the state AG's office, documents said, that the company would not have issued a policy to the defendant had she answered truthfully about her criminal history.

Yova on March 13 waived her preliminary hearing on charges, and she remains free on $2,500 unsecured bail.
