Cindy Bayne of the FCA Gems all-star cheerleading squad won a $1,000 scholarship by taking first place in tumbling and individual jump performance at the Pittsburgh Masters National Championships held Sunday at the Petersen Events Center.
All six FCA Gems squads won national championships in their divisions. The FCA Diamonds won the Grand Championship and $5,000 in college scholarships for some of their seniors.
PITTSBURGH — Joe Mullen, fired last week as a Pittsburgh Penguins assistant coach, will coach Wilkes-Barre (AHL) for the rest of the season.Michel Therrien, previously the coach at the Penguins' top farm club, replaced Eddie Olczyk as Pittsburgh's coach on Thursday. Mullen and Randy Hillier, Olczyk's two assistants, also lost their jobs when Therrien took over.Wilkes-Barre was 21-1-2-1 under Therrien, the best start for a team in AHL history. Mullen, a Hall of Famer, and former Pittsburgh coach Rick Kehoe coached Wilkes-Barre to a 2-1 record over the weekend after Therrien left.This is Mullen's first head coaching job. Mullen, the first American player to have 500 goals and 1,000 points in the NHL, had 502 goals and 561 assists in 1,062 games with the Blues, Flames, Penguins and Bruins.
SEATTLE — Jarrod Washburn agreed to a $37.5 million, four-year deal with the Seattle Mariners, leaving the AL West champion Los Angeles Angels for a team coming off consecutive last-place finishes.The left-hander went 8-8 with a 3.20 ERA in 29 starts for Los Angeles last season. He is 75-57 with a 3.93 ERA during his eight-year career, all with the Angels.His best season came when he went 18-6 during the Angels' 2002 run to the World Series championship.
LOS ANGELES — Nomar Garciaparra and the Los Angeles Dodgers finalized a $6 million, one-year contract that allows the five-time All-Star to earn up to $4 million more in performance bonuses.Garciaparra is moving to first base with the Dodgers. He was strictly a shortstop until last season, when he played third base for the Chicago Cubs in August and September.Garciaparra hit .283 with nine homers and 30 RBIs for the Cubs last season. He tore his left groin running out of the batter's box in St. Louis on April 20 and didn't return until Aug. 5.
Twelve newcomers and a 44-year-old defenseman will be shooting for the United States' first Olympic gold medal in 26 years.Rick DiPietro, the New York Islanders' 24-year-old goaltender, was the youngest player chosen by general manager Don Waddell. Chelios, the old man of the group, will have hit his next birthday by the time the first puck drops in February in Italy.All three U.S. goaltenders are Olympic newcomers.Of the remaining 20 players — 13 forwards and seven defenseman — 11 have been to the Olympics, including two four-time participants and four making their third trips.
TORONTO — Phyllis Gretzky, the mother of hockey Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky, has died, the Phoenix Coyotes said. She was 64.She was diagnosed with lung cancer late in 2004 and died two nights after her son took an indefinite leave of absence as coach of the Coyotes to return home to Ontario to be with her.
WEST ORANGE, N.J. — Larry Robinson resigned as coach of the New Jersey Devils because of stress and "horrible headaches," two days after his team lost for the seventh time in nine games.Robinson, a Hall of Fame defenseman who coached the Devils to the Stanley Cup championship in 2000, returned to the team in July. The Devils are 14-13-5 this season.His replacement was not immediately clear.
