CARLISLE — Twelve Pennsylvania college students researching sustainable energy in Iceland are stranded there because of a volcanic eruption.

Officials at Dickinson College in Carlisle say the students have been studying abroad in England but traveled with their geology professor to Iceland.

Professor Marcus Key says the group arrived in the capital Reykjavik last Tuesday to study hydroelectricity and geothermal plants.

The next day, a nearby volcano spewed massive amounts of ash into the air, grounding European flights for several days. The students had been slated to return to England's University of East Anglia last Friday.

British officials say airspace over Scotland was to reopen this morning, possibly followed by other British airports.

MILLVALE — The Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh is closing a grade school that opened more than 100 school years ago.Holy Spirit School in Millvale, just east of the city, has only about 80 students, fewer than the 100 needed to keep the school financially viable. Church officials say tuition would have had to more than double next year, from $3,250 to $6,600 per student, for the school to remain open.The K-8 school is the 15th elementary school to close in the six-county diocese in the last five years.The diocese still has 95 grade schools and 12 high schools with more than 25,000 students in preschool through 12th grade.

WRIGHTSVILLE — Police say they breathed a sigh of relief after being called to exhume a shallow grave in a park along the Susquehanna River in York County, where they found only the remains of a family dog.Lower Windsor Township Police were summoned Monday after park personnel noticed the grave, a wooden cross and markers bearing the name Layla and goodbye messages. Authorities called in forensics experts, detectives, the coroner's office and an anthropologist, who took photos and measurements before the grave was dug up.Police say they think the dog died recently, and are telling people not to bury their pets in public parks.

INDIANA — Police and officials at Indiana (Pa.) University are trying to identify up to 30 people involved in a fight between rival fraternities that included cinderblocks, a shovel, a baseball bat and a machete as weapons.State police say the brawlers ran away by the time police responded to the off-campus fight about 2:15 a.m. Saturday. Police are working with IUP officials and the fraternities involved to identify suspects who could face charges ranging from aggravated assault to criminal mischief.Police say the injuries they know about are minor, but they're concerned someone more seriously hurt may have fled before police arrived.IUP spokeswoman Michelle Fryling says the students involved will face school discipline, too.
