HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania Turnpike officials say they are looking for ways to better manage commercial traffic during weather emergencies following the massive snowstorm this year that left hundreds of motorists stranded.

Turnpike chief executive officer Mark Compton said part of the problem during the January storm were tractor-trailers that blocked both lanes, despite signs restricting trucks to one lane.

More than 500 vehicles were stranded for almost 24 hours on a 16-mile stretch of the turnpike 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh as about 2 feet of snow fell.

Officials will look at the possibility of increased truck parking along the turnpike, according to a report released Tuesday.
