Rock attack rolls, 62-37

Rivers throws for 405 yards to lead SRU

DETROIT — Nationally-ranked Slippery Rock University’s football team flexed its muscles Thursday night.

Over and over and over.

The Rock (No. 10) scored touchdowns on its first eight possessions in a 62-37 dismantling of host Wayne State.

SRU quarterback Roland Rivers III scorched Wayne State’s defense with 405 yards through the air and six touchdowns. He added 62 yards on the ground and another score.

The Rock led 49-14 at halftime before Rivers hit Jermaine Wynn with a 78-yard scoring pass on the second play of the third quarter and the visitors had their largest lead of the game at 42 points.

SRU rushed for just 3.4 yards per carry (32 for 110), but it did not matter with the team’s aerial show controlling the game.

Wynn finished with eight catches for 152 yards and two touchdowns. Henry Litwin snagged seven balls for 122 yards and two more scores.

The Rock out-gained the Warriors 517-509, though a good portion of Wayne State’s total came with SRU’s second-string defense on the field in the second half.

Warriors’ running back James Hill rushed for 138 yards and three scores.

Butler graduate and SRU linebacker Tim Vernick made five tackles and Brad Zaffram intercepted a pass.

SRU has now won its season-opener 11 straight years.

The Rock’s home opener is Sept. 14 against Shippensburg.
