Driver hurt when pickup hits Donegal house

Crash damages natural gas pipeline

A man suffered minor injuries early Sunday morning when he lost control of his pickup truck and crashed into the side of two-story house in Donegal Township, authorities said. No one was living at the home on the 600 block of Chicora Fenelton Road.

The wreck about 1:30 a.m. damaged a natural gas pipeline and caused a gas leak. The living room side of the house also was damaged. State police are investigating, but an accident report was not immediately available.

Emergency crews said it appeared the Ford F-150 pickup was traveling south when it crossed the northbound lane and struck the left side of the house about 50 feet off the road.

The house was vacant, said Cody Craig, chief of the Chicora Volunteer Fire Department, but there was still electricity and gas connected to the house.

A Karns City Regional Ambulance Service crew tended to the driver, who was alone in the truck and was able to get out on his own. He refused further medical assistance.

The front of the vehicle was about one to two feet into the house. It damaged the wall and some personal property inside.

“When the vehicle hit the wall (it) hit a gas line, so we had a natural gas leak at the location,” Craig said. “We isolated the area where the gas line was and we were monitoring the structure for natural gas.”

National Fuel Gas Distribution was notified and a crew later arrived. A neighbor contacted the homeowner, who also showed up at the scene.

“He actually had gas wells that fed the house as well,” Craig said of the owner, “so he needed to shut them of because the line was damaged there as well.”

Firefighters later assisted the owner in putting up a tarpaulin to cover the damaged exterior wall.

The pickup sustained front-end damage and had to be towed. Fire crews were back at the station about 3:30 a.m.
