SRU nets 14-4 win
Slippery Rock University's baseball team tallied 18 hits in a 14-4 victory in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday at Mansfield.
After dropping the first contest 4-3, The Rock (21-11) received three hits apiece from John Shaffer, Kevin Jovanovich and Austin Benshadle as SRU managed a six-run third inning to break open the second game.
Shaffer's effort included a double and triple while Jovanovich smacked his second home run of the season.
Rock starter Mike Dunn allowed three earned runs in six innings pitched to earn the win. He struck out three and walked two before giving way to reliever John Kovalik.
Mansfield's pitching duo of Danny Brown and Jeremy Mapstone limited SRU to three runs on five hits in the first game.
The loss went to Anton Constantino, who gave up four runs in 4.1 innings of work.
SRU suffered two defeats at the hands of visiting California (Pa.) (21-5, 5-1) by scores of 8-0 and 2-0.In the first game, the Vulcans outhit The Rock 10-3.Taking the loss for SRU was Ashley Knight, who allowed six earned runs in her five innings of work.Emily Lobdell kept The Rock (10-14, 2-4) in Game 2, giving up just the two runs in a complete game, but the host's bats were again shut down with just three hits.
