Spring teams hanging around

School’s out for summer.

Well, unless you are a member of the five Butler County baseball and softball teams left standing after a wild two weeks of district playoffs.

Usually around this time in June, the spring sports schedule is pretty much finito.

But not this year.

No one wants to start summer vacation.

The Seneca Valley baseball and softball teams are in the state playoffs. So is the Karns City baseball team ... and the Grove City baseball team ... oh, and the Moniteau softball team.

All five teams play Monday in the official first round of the PIAA playoffs.

Should things stay as awesome as they have been for those five teams, they could be playing deep into June.

The PIAA baseball and softball championships will be held June 17.

That doesn’t leave much time to lay by the pool and slack off.

But these five teams didn’t get to the state playoffs by slacking off.

All have had great runs and remarkable rides:

• The Seneca Valley baseball team was full of unknowns heading into the 2011 season coming off a trying 2010 campaign.

The Raiders then lost two of their better players to injury before the first pitch.

Still, they rode a wave of momentum to a section title in a wild 9-8 win over Butler on the final day of the regular season and then stayed hot in the WPIAL playoffs, bludgeoning one-loss Peters Township in the District 7 final.

• The Raiders softball team also overcame adversity to get to the state playoffs.

In 2009 and 2010, Seneca Valley missed making the WPIAL playoffs by one game.

Two years ago, the Raiders were poised to make the playoffs, leading Butler 6-2 late, but lost 8-7.

This year, Seneca Valley left nothing to chance and reached the WPIAL final, losing to Latrobe 5-3 Thursday.

• Grove City is back in the state playoffs for the first time since 2009 and face the team that toppled them under controversial circumstances two years ago, Chartiers Valley.

A controversial out call at first base in the bottom of the ninth prevented the Eagles from scoring the winning run. That would have sent them to the PIAA semifinals.

“We felt we were the better team that day,” said Grove City pitcher and shortstop Jon Anderson.

Grove City suffered a huge upset loss in the first round of the District 10 playoffs a year ago. The Eagles have been on a mission to redeem themselves ever since.

• Karns City’s baseball team and Moniteau’s softball team both won a state play-in game Thursday. It was the first state game since 1996 for Karns City and Moniteau’s first state playoff win ... ever.

School’s out for summer, out ’till fall, but these five teams may not lose at all.
