Consistency gives Knox state crown

PENN TWP - For those on the eastern side of the state who know King Knox, they know he's all about consistency.

After Tuesday's second and final round of the 46th annual Pennsylvania State Senior Amateur Golf Championship at Butler Country Club, the western side should know about him, too.

Knox, a member of Lancaster Country Club, fired another 1-over par 72 to capture the title by two strokes over Bill Baloh of Totteridge Golf Club.

"A lot of people know me as someone who hits the fairways, hits the greens and not a lot of putts," said Knox, 62.

"(Monday) was a weird round because I got up and down and had 11 one-putts. If I don't do that, it would be a different story (Tuesday)," he added.

Knox was three shots behind tournament leader Michael Kanoff Jr. after the first day, which was good for fourth place.

Kanoff, however, suffered six consecutive bogeys to start the back nine and fell from contention. Ray Seemiller of Diamond Run and Mark Battista of Philadelphia Publinks GA, who each opened the second day at even par, finished six and 11 shots over, respectively, on Tuesday.

Daniel Burton, who finished in a three-way tie for third with Jim Haynie and Kanoff, was in Knox's threesome and had a one-stroke lead over Knox with three holes to play.

Knox, however, birdied at 16 while Burton lost two strokes and helped to send Knox on his way.

"(Knox) hit a great third shot and I hit it in the rough," said Burton. "I was in a bad lie and I hit another bad shot."

Knox, who spent 50 years playing at Media Heights before spending the past two years at Lancaster, was playing in his first Senior Amateur Open.He qualified for the event last year, but he had another commitment at the same time."I've always been in good shape," said Knox. "I work with a personal trainer and it's helped my game the last two years. I never thought I'd play in the state seniors, though."After Monday's round, Knox went to the range and tried to work on a few things."Obviously, they were the right things. I hit 16 of 18 greens (Tuesday) and I missed another by just one foot," he said.Burton matched that consistency until that 16th hole, which was all Knox needed to pull away."I drove the ball great, really on both days," said Burton of Bent Creek Country Club. "I hit a lot of greens and hit a lot of birdies, but 16 was the turning point."In the Super Senior event, which matched players over 70 in the field, George Bilowick, a member of the Butler Country Club, won the event by carding a 76 Tuesday, giving him a two-day total of 151, one stroke over Richard Smith of Philadelphia Country Club.Bilowick was in fifth place with nine holes remaining as four players were tied at 7-over par and Bilowick two shots behind."It was a numbers game," said Bilowick. "I only hit three fairways and four greens on the back, but local knowledge helped."As it turned out, Bilowick fired a 36 on the back nine. While the others faltered late, Bilowick used a birdie on 16 to eventually pull even with Smith."He bogeyed 18 and I two-putted for par," said Bilowick. "As (Vince) Lombardi says that winning is everything, I would have liked to have played better, but the result was gratifying."Notes:Jim Vollmer and Robert Baft, members of St. Jude Golf Club in Chicora, finished with scores of 157 and 167, respectively. Vollmer finished the day with an 8-over 79 and Baft fired an 86. … The top 25 finishers receive an exemption in next year's event.
