Barkley

Ruth Emily McCandless Barkley, 100, of Elizabethtown, Pa., formerly of Grove City and Slippery Rock, passed away at the Masonic Villages in Elizabethtown on Monday, June 10, 2024.

She was born in Muddy Creek Township, Butler County, on Dec. 24, 1923, to Bert Harold McCandless and Phoebe Coral Gallagher McCandless. She married Dale C. Barkley on June 19, 1943. Ruth was a graduate of Butler High School. She was a homemaker and enjoyed playing cards, bingo and gardening.

Ruth is survived by two daughters, Dianna R. (Milton) McCommons of Dauphin, Pa., and Ida Mae Brown of Rome, Ga.; two daughters-in-law, Karen Sue Barkley and Darlene Barkley, both of Slippery Rock.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Nancy L. Allman; two sons, Dale C. Barkley Jr. and John H. Barkley; two sisters, Dorothy I. Scott and Betty Lou Cratty; and one brother, Leroy McCandless.

BARKLEY — The family of Ruth Emily McCandless Barkley, who died Monday, June 10, 2024, will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the time of service at noon Saturday at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock. A funeral service for Ruth will immediately follow at the funeral home with Pastor James Roxbury presiding.

Interment will be in Greenlawn Burial Estates, 731 W. Old Route 422, Franklin Township.

Memorial contributions may be given to Masonic Charities at One Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown, PA 17022.
