Butler County Parks and Recreation's Alameda Waterpark has delayed its opening because of a lack of lifeguards.

The temporary delay likely will range from one to two weeks, with the goal of being opened by June 19, according to a news release posted to the park's website.

The waterpark, located at 185 Alameda Park Road, originally was to open June 5.

“So many businesses have been impacted by this pandemic, and are struggling to find employees,” said Leslie Osche, chairwoman of the Butler County commissioners. “Alameda Waterpark is a highly-visited attraction in Butler, and we wanted to offer extra benefit opportunities to those who are qualified to be a lifeguard. It's our job to support our citizens and help in any way we can.”

In an attempt to bring in more lifeguards, the county will launch a program offering about $1,600 in incentives and bonus opportunities in addition to an employee's hourly rate of $10 to $12. The incentives include certification fees, a complimentary family pool pass and more.

The intention is to attract high school and college-age lifeguards as well as retirees who are interested in working at Alameda Waterpark throughout the summer months.

Lifeguard training is planned for the week of June 7 to 12.
