PHILADELPHIA — A boy was shot in the back and killed as he rode a dirt bike he recently received as a present for his 16th birthday.

Luis Navarro III was shot three times about 6:50 p.m. Saturday while riding the bike on a wooded path near his home in the city's Juniata neighborhood, police said.

His parents gave him the $3,000 dirt bike a week earlier for his birthday. Family members said teen was so thrilled that he slept next to it for five days in the basement, where it was parked between his bed and a shelf brimming with Spider-Man figurines.

"He didn't do any drugs. He was never in the streets, selling drugs like many young people around here," said his father, Luis Navarro Jr. "We always gave him everything he wanted so he wouldn't get in any trouble. But look what happened."
