PITTSBURGH — The Richard King Mellon Foundation of Pittsburgh has given $4 million to Grove City College for a new science, engineering and mathematics building.

A Pittsburgh newspaper reported Thursday the gift will help pay for the $37 million building.

The school plans to open the 63,000 square-foot building for the fall 2013 semester.

College President Dr. Richard G. Jewell says the school is heartened by the wonderful gift.

Philadelphia-based architectural firm Ballinger designed the building.

PITTSBURGH — Surviving relatives of four people killed in flash flooding in Pittsburgh in August 2011 are suing several government and private entities claiming the deaths could have been prevented.Mary Saflin, 72, was swept away from her vehicle and drowned in the torrential waters, and 45-year-old Kimberly Griffith and her two daughters, 12 and 8, were trapped in their van and died when heavy rains caused a nine-foot wall of water to sweep down a low-lying section of Washington Boulevard.Attorneys Alan Perer and Paul Manion have scheduled a news conference for this morning to announce the lawsuit against the city, its water and sewer authority, Allegheny County and its sewage authority, PennDOT, an engineering firm and even Chrysler Group, which made the Griffiths' van.Those entities didn't immediately return e-mails and calls for comment before business hours.

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett says he's concerned to hear reports about an investigation of his son-in-law, a Philadelphia narcotics police officer.Several media outlets citing anonymous sources are reporting that Corbett's son-in-law is under investigation by the FBI and police Internal Affairs.Corbett said: “I was surprised and concerned to learn about the allegations regarding my son-in-law Gerold Gibson. Susan and I continue to give our family our love and support.”The Philadelphia Police Department said Thursday an officer was placed on administration leave as a result of an investigation but gave no details. The officer's name wasn't released.Calls by The Associated Press to investigators were either not returned or officials were unable to confirm the reports.
