A geyser gushed from a water main break across the street from the Armstrong customer service center building located at 437 North Main Street in Butler Monday evening.

According to emergency dispatchers, reports of the water main break came in about 7:46 p.m. when callers started reporting a 40 to 50 foot water geyser shooting out of the ground along Main Street.

The water main break occurred north of Dental Associates near the driveway of John E. Hollock Insurance Agency.

The break flooded the stairwell to the basement of Dental Associates.

Lt. Richard Walters of the Butler Fire Department said that the door to the basement of the building held water back, lessening the potential damage of the water main break to the basement.

Firefighters brought in pumps to remove the water.

It took a four-man crew from the fire department about 30 minutes to drain the water from the basement stairwell. At the same time, staff from the dental office were already clearing water that had made its way inside the building.

Water valves in the immediate area were shut off around 8:50 p.m.

"Thanks to Pennsylvania American Water for coming out so quickly," Walters said.
