Pirates fall in San Diego

SAN DIEGO — JT Brubaker struck out seven in five innings Wednesday night for a no-decision, but the Pittsburgh Pirates dropped a 4-2 decision at San Diego.

Brian Reynolds homered for the Pirates (13-17), who lost for the sixth time in seven games.

Jake Cronenworth delivered a two-run single for the Padres in the sixth to break a 2-2 deadlock. Duane Underwood Jr. took the loss in relief.

Erik Gonzalez committed three errors at third base for the Pirates after playing errorless ball all season.

Victor Caratini homered for San Diego (18-14). Yu Darvish was the starting pitcher for the Padres and struck out eight in 5.2 innings. He left the game with a high pitch count.

The Pirates were unable to dent the San Diego bullpen as Mark Melancon recorded his 11th save in as many opportunities.

The Pirates continue their road trip Friday afternoon, taking on the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
