While some students were loading up their clothing and furniture to move out of their dorm rooms Thursday, May 2, others were loading a box truck with some unwanted decorations and clothing, which would go to the Good Shepherd Center thrift store.

Angel Morgano, president of the Association of Residence Hall Students at Slippery Rock University, said the organization had alerted students they could get rid of unwanted items through a donation drive. The association collected items including clothing, bedding, decorations, bathroom products and furniture over the past week or so, then donated the items to the Good Shepherd Center and the Kind Closet.

“We took everything, if they didn’t want it, we would take it,” Morgano said. “They could donate at three different places on campus.”

Morgano said the drive was a big success. The association was able to nearly fill a box truck with donations to the Good Shepherd Center on Thursday.

Ben Vossler, an employee of the Good Shepherd Center, said money generated through sales in the agency’s thrift store funds the center’s food pantry. He said, while loading donations onto a box truck Thursday, the pantry serves more than 450 clients a month.

“Donations get set out on the thrift store floor, and if it’s resold that revenue supports the food pantry,” Vossler said. “This kind of thing really helps us.”
