PHILADELPHIA — Lew Carpenter, a running back who played on three NFL title teams in a 10-year playing career, has died at 78.The Philadelphia Eagles have announced that Carpenter, a former wide receivers coach with the team, died Sunday in Texas. No cause was given.Carpenter was a member of the Detroit Lions' 1953 NFL championship team and won titles with the Green Bay Packers in 1961 and ‘62.He played with the Lions from 1953 to 1955 and spent the 1957 and 1958 seasons with Cleveland before playing five seasons with the Packers.
GURGAON, India — English star Laura Davies won the Women's Indian Open on Sunday for her 77th worldwide victory, beating Thailand's Nontaya Srisawang, South Africa's Tandi Cuningham and Sweden's Louise Friberg with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff.Davies eagled the par-5 18th in regulation for a 2-under 70 to match Nontaya (71), Cuningham (73) and Friberg (70).at 3-underunder 213. on the DLF Golf & Country Club course. In the playoff, Davies reached the green on the 18th in two and two-putted for the victory.At 47, Davies broke her own record as the oldest winner in Ladies European Tour history. The four-time major champion has 44 LET victories, 20 LPGA Tour titles and 13 other tour victories.She has five LET victories this year, also winning in New Zealand, Germany, Austria and Spain.Davies opened with rounds of 65 and 78.

There was no point in sticking around. .For the first time in his career, Woods is no longer the defending champion of anything, anywhere in the world.When he won the Australian Masters a year ago at Kingston Heath, it was his 82nd victory around the world.That remains his last.
PITTSBURGH — Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward sustained a concussion attempting to make a catch in the first quarter against New England on Sunday night, ending his streak of 186 consecutive games with at least one reception.The streak was the Steelers’ longest and the third-longest in NFL history.Ward was hurt while being hit by Patrick Chung and James Sanders on what was initially ruled a 6-yard catch on Pittsburgh’s third possession. Sanders’ helmet appeared to strike Ward’s helmet.Ward stumbled while being helped off the field. During the break between quarters, the Patriots challenged the completion and it was overturned because Ward did not maintain possession.
