Steeler fans need to relax
Steelers’ fans need to take a page from Aaron Rodgers.

Sure, losing to the Tampa Bay Bumbleers wasn’t the best way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Sure, losing to a team that was thrashed on national television the week before wasn’t really putting a good foot forward.
But every team gets thrashed on Thursday night. Just ask the Steelers and the Packers and the Redskins and the Vikings.
This is the NFL, not the Sun Belt Conference. Any team can beat any team on any given Sunday — you know, that old cliche.
It just so happened the Buccaneers were that any given team and Sunday was that any given Sunday.
The sky isn’t falling.
Fans have short memories. Last year at this time, the Black and Gold were black and blue and sitting at 0-4.
They almost made the playoffs. They would have made the playoffs had Kansas City kicker Ryan Succop not missed a gimmie field goal.
So, in the grand scheme of things, 2-2 isn’t so bad.
It could be worse. They could be like the team the Steelers play this week, the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Last week, the Jags gave up 33 points. That was the fewest points scored in a game by their opponent this season.
Jacksonville hasn’t even come close to winning a game in 2014. The Jags have played one good half, in Week 1 against the Eagles, and seven terrible ones since.
Then again, there is that any-given-Sunday-thing the Steelers must watch out for.
Should the Steelers lose at Jacksonville, then that’s when fans should break the glass over the panic button.
But not now.
A lot was made of the penalties in the loss to Tampa Bay.
Granted, 13 penalties for 125 yards is an awful lot, but very few of them actually made a difference in the game.
Heath Miller had a TD reception called back because of a yellow flag. He scored again on the same drive anyway.
Antonio Brown was flagged for a celebration penalty after a TD. Cameron Heyward was flagged for arguing with an official after he was blatantly held on a touchdown run by Doug Martin.
None of those infractions changed the outcome of that game.
The two flags that had the most impact were the facemask penalties. One got the Bucs in position for one of the flukiest field goals in NFL history.
The so-called “composure and undisciplined” penalties had little, if no, affect.
The degree of influence an NFL coach has over his players’ attitudes is vastly overrated. These are grown men and grown men will listen to other grown men only to a certain degree.
Mike Tomlin can tell his grown men that they shouldn’t get stupid penalties, but those grown men will continue to get stupid penalties because that is who they are.
Brown is a gifted receiver, but he’s also giftedly foolish. That will never change.
One bad loss doesn’t end the season.
