MERIDIAN — Meridian residents Jordan and Grant Foley were named all-conference for their respective football teams this season.

Jordan, a junior at the U.S. Naval Academy, was named CSFL all-conference at running back, leading the team with 751 all-purpose yards in seven games. He added a program record 259 yards in kickoff returns.

Grant, a senior offensive guard at Shady Side Academy, was named All-Allegheny Conference and is an all-academic athlete as well.

Numerous Butler County boys soccer players earned all-section honors out of Section 2-AA.Among the honorees are Alex Perri, Josh Brake and Yulian Lutsiv of Mars; Klaus Ondrizek, Kory Wood and Trevor Gordon of Knoch; and Talon Kirkland and Garrett Blake of Freeport.Knoch's James Conklin and Freeport's David Hidinger earned honorable mentions.

PITTSBURGH — Pitt hopes to play one nonconference men's basketball game per season at the new Consol Energy Center, in addition to the annual City Game against Duquesne.Pitt coach Jamie Dixon said scheduling such games can be difficult, but the Panthers anticipate playing twice annually at the downtown arena. There are no plans to play any Big East Conference games there.The Panthers once played top Big East games at the Civic Arena, but that was before the Petersen Events Center opened in 2002.No. 3 Pitt plays two games at Consol in an 11-day span, against Duquesne Wednesday and No. 13 Tennessee on Dec. 11 in the SEC/Big East invitational. Auburn also plays Rutgers at the arena that day.Both Pitt and Duquesne have locker rooms at the arena.

LAUREL, Md. — The future of the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of horse racing's Triple Crown, was in doubt Monday after the state racing commission rejected plans for a much shorter live racing schedule at Maryland's two tracks.The commission, which turned down the plan by an 8-0 vote, told representatives of MI Developments and Penn National Gaming, partners in operating the Maryland Jockey Club, that its plan for 17 days of live thoroughbred racing at Laurel Park in January followed by 30 live days at Pimlico Race Course in April and May was unacceptable. The two venues are currently on track for 146 days of live racing this year.The lack of an agreement for the future threatens racetrack employees, all off-track wagering in the state and the future of the Preakness, a Baltimore tradition that was set for May 21 at Pimlico.

NEW YORK — Gil McDougald, an All-Star infielder who helped the New York Yankees win five World Series championships during the 1950s, has died. He was 82.The Yankees released a statement Monday saying McDougald died Sunday of prostate cancer at his home in Wall Township, N.J.McDougald spent his entire 10-year major league career with the Yankees and played a key role on one of baseball's greatest dynasties.He was the AL Rookie of the Year in 1951 and teamed with Hall of Famers such as Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford and manager Casey Stengel to lead New York to eight American League pennants from 1951-60.A versatile infielder who played second base, third base and shortstop, McDougald batted .276 with 112 home runs and 576 RBI.

PITTSBURGH — Pirates third baseman Andy LaRoche and infielder Delwyn Young have become free agents after clearing waivers.The Pirates removed both players from their 40-man roster when they were designated for assignment on Nov. 19.LaRoche was the starting third baseman in 2009, but lost his job while hitting .206 with four homers and 16 RBIs last season. Young hit .236 with seven homers and 28 RBI.Since the season ended, the Pirates have shed outfielder Brandon Moss and LaRoche, two of the four players they acquired from the Red Sox and Dodgers in the Jason Bay trade in 2008. Moss signed a minor league deal with Philadelphia.
