PITTSBURGH — Joe Tumpkin, who coached the past three seasons with new Pitt defensive coordinator Phil Bennett, was hired Monday as the Panthers' linebackers coach.

Tumpkin previously was the linebackers coach at SMU, where Bennett was the head coach until being let go during a 1-11 season last year. Tumpkin replaces Charlie Partridge, who resigned two weeks ago to become an assistant at Wisconsin.

PITTSBURGH — The weekly Associated Press college basketball poll was missing a familiar name Monday: the University of Pittsburgh.The Panthers, ranked in 43 consecutive polls since December 2005, dropped out of the Top 25 following Friday's 72-54 loss at Marquette, now No. 25. The loss was Pitt's worst in a Big East Conference regular-season game in seven years, or since an 84-64 defeat at Rutgers on Feb. 11, 2001.Pitt has been ranked as high as No. 6 this season, following its upset win over then-No. 6 Duke on Dec. 20 in Madison Square Garden.The Panthers (19-6, 7-5 Big East) have lost four of their last eight games and face a difficult closing stretch as they try to position themselves for the Big East tournament. They play Thursday at No. 21 Notre Dame (19-5, 9-3), then take on No. 18 Louisville (20-6, 10-3) at home Sunday.

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins' home game against Atlanta on March 2 will start at 3 p.m.The Penguins had not set a starting time because the game was under consideration for an NBC telecast.
