Numerous Freeport and Summit Academy football players have been named All-Allegheny Conference this season.
Freeport players named first team offense are tight end Sean Carson, guard Jon Turner, tackle Nathan Rummel and running back Damon Smith. Summit tackle Rasheed May and running back Chris Highsmith also made first team.
Carson, Turner, lineman Brian Welsh, linebackers Alec Stivers and Josh Wisniewski, and defensive back Brendan Lynch are Yellowjackets making first team defense. Summit defensive back David Carter also made the squad.
Nadal ousted from ATP event LONDON — Jo-Wilfried Tsonga qualified for the semifinals in the ATP World Tour Finals at the expense of Rafael Nadal, beating the second-ranked Spaniard 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-3 in a decisive round-robin match.Tsonga improved to 2-1 in group play while Nadal fell to 1-2, meaning the sixth-seeded Frenchman will join Roger Federer in the last four from Group B. It is the first time Tsonga has reached the semifinals at the season-ending tournament for the world’s top eight players, while Nadal missed out for the second time in five appearances.
O’Hara, Kruger share golf lead JOHANNESBURG — Steven O’Hara and local favorite Jbe Kruger each shot a 7-under 65 to share the lead after the first round of the South African Open.The pair led a group of four South Africans by a stroke on the undulating Jack Nicklaus-designed course at Serengeti Golf Club. Two-time champion Retief Goosen (66) was in that group after hitting an eagle, seven birdies and three bogeys at the European Tour event.Defending champion Ernie Els began his defense with a 69. The five-time winner holed six birdies but also made three bogeys.
Female coach takes 33-21 lossWASHINGTON — The only female high school football coach in the nation’s capital will have to settle for a winning season instead of a championship season.Natalie Randolph’s Coolidge High School lost to Dunbar 33-21 Thursday in the Turkey Bowl city championship game.Randolph is believed to be the only female head coach of a high school varsity football team in the country.
Lulay named CFL’s top playerVANCOUVER, British Columbia — Former Montana State quarterback Travis Lulay was selected the Canadian Football League’s outstanding player Thursday night.The B.C. Lions star edged Montreal quarterback Anthony Calvillo in the voting.The 28-year-old Lulay, in his first full season as B.C.’s starter, has led the Lions to the Grey Cup game Sunday night in Vancouver against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He passed for 4,815 yards and 32 touchdowns this season.
