Rep. Kelly outspends LaVallee

Incumbent enjoys fundraising lead

Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly by a nearly 2-to-1 margin outraised Democratic challenger Dan LaVallee in the third quarter, but he has an even greater spending advantage in the final weeks before Election Day, their campaigns reported.

Kelly’s fundraising between July 1 and Sept. 30 totaled $262,485 compared to $138,299 for LaVallee.

The incumbent, an auto dealer who lives in Butler, had $478,444 in the bank at the end of September, according to his most recent Federal Election Commission report.

A former deputy director of American Health Insurance Plan, a health care trade association in Washington, D.C., LaVallee of Cranberry Township had $134,531 cash to end the recent quarter, his FEC report showed.

Kelly since 2011 has represented Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional District, which includes all of Butler, Armstrong and Mercer counties, all of Crawford County except Titusville, and parts of Clarion, Erie and Lawrence counties.

During the past quarter, Kelly’s campaign committee spent $472,455, or four times that of LaVallee’s committee, which spent $117,300.

The Republican has raised $1.39 million in the 2013-14 election cycle. His Democratic opponent, a political newcomer, raised $369,231.

For the two-year election cycle, Kelly, 66, has spent $1.02 million, while LaVallee, 26, has spent $234,674.

Slightly more than 60 percent of Kelly’s campaign contributions have come from political election committees.

On the other hand, individuals have accounted for 84 percent of LaValle’s contributions.

ActBlue, the Democratic National Committee’s online fundraising organization, also has provided a big boost to the challenger’s campaign.

The group, which directs contributions from individual contributors to Democratic candidates, has given LaVallee’s committee $65,877 during the election cycle, his report showed.
