JACKSON TWP — The Seneca Valley Athletic Hall of Fame will induct six new members during a banquet at the high school Sept. 11.
The Class of 2010 includes Dennis Stewart, Amanda Smith, Jose Raymundo, Lynett McBride, Charles Stevens and Tom Heckendorn.
The banquet will begin with a social reception at 6 p.m. and the induction ceremony starts at 7:30.
Tickets are $20 and can be purchased beginning Wednesday at the SV High Athletic Office during school hours.
The group will also be recognized at the varsity football game against Fox Chapel on Sept. 10.
SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University men's and women's cross country teams are selected to finish fifth and second, respectively, in the PSAC preseason coaches poll.Shippensburg received all 16 first-place votes in the women's poll.Shippensburg received 10 first-place votes on the PSAC men's poll. Seneca Valley graduate Eric Geddis returns as one of SRU's top runners.
McKEESPORT — At the Callaway Golf Assistant Championship Wednesday, Dennis Munko of Birdsfoot Golf Club fired a two-round total of 144 to earn the third alternate spot for the PGA Assistant Championship.That tournament will be held Nov. 11-14 at the PGA Golf Club.Justin Caroli of Lakeview Resort won Wednesday's event with a 135.Doug Sutter of Treesdale Golf and Country Club tied for 16th (149) and Jimmy Brahm of Butler Country Club was 32nd (155).
LAS VEGAS — The doctor who found the body of 25-year-old professional golfer Erica Blasberg told Nevada investigators he hid a suicide note and pills because he wanted to spare her family embarrassment, according to a court document released Wednesday.Detectives investigating the golfer's death searched the doctor's Mercedes-Benz, which was parked in Blasberg's driveway, and found a suicide note and Xanax pills obtained in Mexico.
PARAMUS, N.J. — Jim Furyk picked a bad time to sleep in.Furyk overslept Wednesday when his cell phone lost power overnight and the alarm didn't go off, causing him to be late for his pro-am tee time in The Barclays. That left PGA Tour officials no choice but to make him ineligible for the first of four FedEx Cup playoff events.A two-time winner on tour this year, Furyk is No. 3 in the standings as the race for the $10 million prize gets under way at Ridgewood Country Club without him.
WASHINGTON — Washington Nationals outfielder Nyjer Morgan was given a seven-game suspension for deliberately throwing a baseball into the stands and hitting a fan during a game in Philadelphia last week.Morgan has appealed the penalty that Major League Baseball imposed. He will be able to play until the appeal process is complete.
