Russell E. "Dick" Fennell, 83, of Karns City died at 5:30 a.m. Monday at his home after an illness.

Born in Fenelton, June 20, 1923, he was the son of Ellis F. and Alice C. Shook Fennell.

He served in the Navy from April 3, 1943, to March 30, 1946, achieving the rank of 3rd class and was a ship's cook.

Mr. Fennell had been a coal miner in Wildwood, near North Park and Gibsonia, for 10 years. He then worked at Koppers Co. in Petrolia, now Indspec, as a shipping clerk.

He was a long-time member of the Butler County Horseshoe League and is in the Horseshoe Hall of Fame.

He was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of Chicora.

Surviving are his wife, Bella J. Horton Fennell, whom he married Oct. 19, 1946; a daughter, Mrs. James (Carol) Stewart of Butler; a son, Rick L. Fennell of Bradford, Ohio; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and a brother, Norman "Butch" Fennell of Chicora.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and six brothers.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church with the Rev. Grant Walborn officiating.
