Rock tosses combined no-hitter Sunday
SLIPPERY ROCK — Joey Purcell and Michael Kitko tossed a combined no-hitter on Sunday as the Slippery Rock University baseball team shut out Saint Anselm, 5-0, at Critchfield Park.
The Rock improved to 8-3 on the season. The teams split a doubleheader on Saturday, SRU winning the opener, 5-0, and Saint Anselm (6-10) taking the nightcap, 13-9.
Purcell tossed seven innings Sunday and struck out nine. He faced two batters over the minimum, walking a pair. Kitko pitched the final two frames, striking out four and walking one.
The no-hitter was the seventh by the Rock baseball program dating back to the 2002 season. The most recent was March 6, 2022, when Slippery Rock High School graduate Ricky Mineo and Travis Holman combined for a seven-inning no-hitter against Davis & Elkins. The program’s last nine-inning no-hitter was tossed by Mike Sikorski on May 16, 2003, vs. Kutztown.
The Rock begins PSAC West play on Friday, hosting Pitt-Johnstown for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Critchfield Park.
