Meridian wins shootout over Saxonburg
Meridian scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday night to defeat Saxonburg, 14-13, in Butler County American Legion baseball play.
Consecutive singles by Ben Berresford, Alex Scialabba and Nick Legacy plated the runs. Meridian (15-3) had taken an 8-0 lead in the first inning before Saxonburg rallied.
Saxonburg scored five times in the sixth inning and three times in the top of the seventh to turn an 11-5 deficit into a 13-11 lead.
Jace Lyon had three doubles and two RBI while Bobby Swartwout had two singles, a double and two RBI for Meridian. Berresford added a double and single, Scialabba two singles and three RBI, Matt Dowdy two singles and two RBI, Legacy, Joey Friel and Eric Turner two singles each.
Jake Koerner contributed a single and two RBI for the winners.
Garrett Shaw homered and singled for Saxonburg while Cody Beacom had two singles and a double. Zane Voltz added two doubles, Joshua Sheppeck a double and single, Mac Megahan two singles.
Meridian meets Center Township (12-5) at 6 p.m. Saturday at Pullman Park.
