SR relay record falls at D-10 meet
Season Grant, Maddie Gauselman, Mollie Massella and Raely Fajohn broke the Slippery Rock High School girls 400 free relay record with a time of 3 minutes, 39.71 seconds at the District 10 Swimming Championships on Saturday.
Fajohn took second in the 100 free in 54.07 seconds. On the boys side, Cody Hartle was seventh in the 500 free.
The Rocket girls finished in third place as a team.
SRU baseball team off to 5-0 start
CARY, N.C. — The Slippery Rock University baseball team improved to 5-0 on the season with an 11-0 win over Dominican (NY) on Saturday. Gage Gillott and Robert Herr combined on the five-hit shutout.
The win was the 1,100th of coach Jeff Messer’s career. He is one of 60 NCAA baseball coaches, all divisions, to reach that number.
SRU lost its first game of the season on Sunday, dropping a 10-0 decision to St. Thomas Aquinas.
Perez solid on hill in Pirates’ defeat
BRADENTON, Fla. — Martin Perez retired nine of the 10 batters he faced in three innings on Saturday, throwing 24 of his 31 pitches for strikes in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ 5-2 Grapefruit League loss to Baltimore.
Connor Joe had an RBI single and Ke’Bryan Hayes had a pair of hits for the Pirates. Aroldis Chapman threw nine of his 11 pitches for strikes in working a scoreless fourth hinning.
The Pirates play the Tampa Bay Rays in Port Charlotte, Fla., at 1:05 p.m. Monday.
