The Karns City girls and Slippery Rock boys soccer teams will both begin play in the PIAA soccer playoffs Tuesday.

The Gremlins, the District 9 Class AA champions, will face WPIAL runner-up Shady Side Academy at 5:30 p.m. at Clarion University's Memorial Stadium.

The Rockets, who finished in second place in District 10 Class AA, will battle WPIAL champ Thomas Jefferson at 6 p.m. at Shaler High School.

The Seneca Valley girls volleyball team, fresh off its first-ever WPIAL title, begins the PIAA playoffs by taking on City League champ Carrick at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at North Hills High School.

ATLANTA - U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen closed with a 6-under 64 to win the Tour Championship by four shots Sunday and become only the third player to overtake Tiger Woods in the final round.Goosen made up a four-shot deficit on the front nine at East Lake, took the outright lead with a 35-foot birdie putt on the 13th and ended all the suspense with the best shot of the tournament.From 195 yards in the rough, he hit a 5-iron within 3 feet for the only birdie of the day on the 481-yard 16th hole.Woods ends the season with only one victory, matching his lowest output in nine years on tour. He also won only once in 1998.

OTSU, Japan - Annika Sorenstam matched the LPGA Tour record for consecutive victories in a tournament, winning the Mizuno Classic for the fourth straight season to lock up her seventh player of the year title Sunday.Closing with a 7-under 65 for her second straight nine-stroke victory in the event, Sorenstam won her seventh LPGA Tour title of the year and 55th overall - tying Betsy Rawls for fifth place on the career list.The Swedish star finished at 22-under 194, two strokes off her tour-record mark in 2003 on the Seta course.

NEW YORK - Paula Radcliffe pulled away in the final few feet and won the tightest women's race in New York City Marathon history. The world record holder crossed in 2 hours, 23 minutes, 10 seconds on Sunday, beating Susan Chepkemei by 4 seconds.Hendrik Ramaala won the men's race in 2:09:28 for his first marathon victory. Olympic silver medalist Meb Keflezighi of the United States was next across, 25 seconds behind in a personal best of 2:09:53. Ryan Shay was ninth in 2:14:08, marking the first time since 1993 that two American men finished in the top 10.

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Amelie Mauresmo beat Vera Zvonareva 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 Sunday, successfully defending her Advanta Championships title for her fifth tournament victory of 2004.Mauresmo, playing with a taped left thigh after complaining of tightness Saturday, flustered the Russian with a couple of big overheads and some nice passing shots.
