3 county wrestlers in WPIAL semifinals

Butler’s Santino Sloboda and Kase Chopp, along with Seneca Valley’s Connor Smith, reached the WPIAL AAA wrestling semifinals with their performances Friday night at Canon-McMillan High School.

Sloboda (34-0), wrestling at 114 pounds, won by technical fall over Nathan Caracciolo of Hempfield, then pinned Evan Tolliver of Ringgold to reach the semifinals, where he will face West Allegheny’s Caiden Harbert (34-10). Chopp (33-5), at 133, pinned Joey Maritato of Moon, then edged Carson Yocca of Plum, 4-2, to reach the semifinal round, where he will face top-seed Mason Kernan (33-3) of Bethel Park.

Smith (26-6), at 121, pinned Evan Sala of Mt. Lebanon and earned a 17-0 technical fall over Charlie Colantonio of Central Catholic to reach the semifinals. Seeded third, Smith will meet second-seed Tyler Kapusta (41-5) in the next round.

Butler’s Gavin Rush at 139, Seneca Valley’s Zach Hill at 139 and Thomas Wuycheck at 215, Mars’ Liam Hein at 145 and Augustus Aubrecht at 215 reached the second round of consolations on Friday. After pinning Evan Petrovich of Connellsville, Hein dropped a 6-4 decision to Chris Cibrone of Peters Township in the quarterfinals.

The semifinals are slated for noon Saturday, the finals at 4 p.m.,. at Canon-McMillan. The girls West Regional will take place Saturday at Canon-Mac as well.

Boys Basketball

Hayden Smith led four Union players in double figures, scoring 17 points as the Golden Knights defeated DuBois Central, 63-42, in a PIAA Class A play-in game Thursday night.

Dawson Camper added 14 points, Owen Bish 12 and Trey Fleming 10 for Union. The Golden Knights had a 38-17 lead by halftime.

Andrew Green led DuBois Central with 14 points.

Swimming

Slippery Rock’s Mollie Massella took first place in the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle at the District 10 Championships on Friday. Her times were 58.81 seconds and 1 minute, 56.79 seconds, respectively.

Other top-eight finishes for the Rockets were Raely Fajohn (fifth in 50 free), Kevin Bowser (fifth in 100 butterfly), Maddie Gauselmann (eighth in 200 free) and Cody Hartle (eighth in 200 IM).

The girls 200 free relay of Season Grant, Gauselmann. Massella and Fajohn placed third.
