Tell me if you have heard this one before.

Karns City is the last Butler County area football team standing.

What? You’ve heard that before?

And here we are — again — with the Gremlins the final team alive in the PIAA playoffs.

Karns City will face a familiar foe in Chestnut Ridge.

The two teams have squared off in this round of the playoffs the last two seasons with the Gremlins emerging with 35-29 and 35-14 victories.

Will the third time be a charm for the Lions?

Perhaps I’m not the best prognosticator to tell you that.

I went 1-3 last week to dash my hopes of a 110-win season.

Still, I’m 104-23 this year — not too shabby.

Let’s find out if I can make it 105.

Three reasons to pick Karns City.

No. 1: The Gremlins are, well, the Gremlins.

Playing in the postseason is nothing new to Karns City. Neither is winning these type of games.

No. 2: Depth and speed.

The Gremlins have both.

Even without Tyler Dunn and Cody Deal, who are out with season-ending injuries, Karns City will be able to overcome those losses because they have a stable of players who can fill the void.

Tristan Rhoades is expected to be back and he may be the fastest and most elusive player on the field.

Karns City also has Collin Dunmyre, who had a career game against St. Marys last week, and can throw the ball with quarterback Caleb King and receiver Logan Moroney.

No. 3: History.

Karns City is 3-1 in this inter-district round of the state playoffs, the only setback coming in overtime against Bedford in 2009.

Three reasons to pick Chestnut Ridge:

No. 1: The Lions are the home team — literally.

Chestnut Ridge is hosting the Gremlins on its home field, which is grass.

With a rather damp forecast, it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that the field will be muddy. And the Lions are definitely more mudders.

Oh, and that one Karns City loss in the inter-district round to Bedford? That was at Bedford’s home field.

No. 2: Balance.

Chestnut Ridge’s offense can do a lot of things. The Lions can grind it out with their bruising fullback Matt Wiley — which may be a big deal on a muddy field — and they can throw the ball with the fullback’s cousin, Tyler Wiley.

Karns City’s defense will have to defend the whole field against Chestnut Ridge.

No. 3: The Lions may have the kind of defense to slow down Karns City.

Chestnut Ridge has been stingy, shutting out three of its last five opponents and forcing 20 turnovers.

I still like Karns City in this one, although I think it’s going to be close and will come down to the fourth quarter.

My pick: Karns City 30, Chestnut Ridge 26.
