Hal Walker brings his ?We Want More Harmonicas? rally featuring a free group harmonica lesson to the Kaleidoscope arts festival on April 21. The lesson is free and open to all ages, but participants need to have a 10-hole harmonica in the key of C, which can be taken along or purchased there for $5.

The 11th Kaleidoscope Arts Festival will be held Sunday through April 29 on the Slippery Rock University campus.

Kaleidoscope will feature the best of SRU's dance, music, theater and visual arts, as well as nationally and internationally known guest artists.

Children's Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 21 is a family-oriented celebration of music, dance, arts and crafts, balloons and food.

Performing on Children's Day this year will be the Slippery Rock Elementary School Dancers with guest artist Hal Walker, a singer, songwriter, and musical explorer whose style engages audiences of all ages.

Walker brings his “We Want More Harmonicas” rally to the SRU campus with a free mass harmonica lesson at 2 p.m. April 21.

Throughout Children's Day, guest artist Brian Harper will be making a “Walking Wall,” a ceramic mural made up of footprints.

The festival schedule includes “Bob Dylan and the Poetry of the Blues: An Evening with Michael Gray” at 7:30 p.m. April 19 in Swope Music Hall.

Gray presents more of a one-man-show than a talk by using records and rare footage to show how Dylan has been inspired by the blues.

This year also marks the first Kaleidoscope Arts Festival Playwriting Competition. The winning plays will be featured as part of the SRU theater department's Brave New Plays from April 20 to 26.

The winning submission, “Acts of Contrition” by Patricia Montley, will join the SRU theater tour to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland in August.

It will play in repertory with the second place submission, “Raw” by Eoin Carney, at 7:30 p.m. April 20 and 24 and at 2 p.m. April 22 in Miller Auditorium.

Kaleidoscope will also feature Taiko Drums with Takumi Kato, the winner of first place and highest honor in the seventh Tokyo International Taiko Competition 2008.

The Taiko Drums performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. April 28 in Swope Music Hall.Other acts include:• Ill-Style & Peace Productions, a Philadelphia-based dance company founded in 2002 by Brandon “Peace” Albright, at 7 p.m. April 17 in the University Union Multipurpose Room.• Susana Chávez-Silverman, the author of “Killer Crónicas: Bilingual Memories,” an exploration of self and place, at 12:30 p.m. April 24 in the Advanced Technology and Science Hall auditorium.• The Third Coast Film Festival, a screening series of short dance films celebrating contemporary dance and the moving image, at 12:30 p.m. April 26 in the Advanced Technology and Science Hall auditorium.• The first Slippery Rock University Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition, an invitational exhibition hosted by Professor Emeritus James Myford, featuring nine regional and national artists who will install 12 sculptures across campus.A complete schedule is available at www.sru.edu/ academics/colleges/ chfpa/kaleidoscope/ Pages/home.aspx.
