New traffic stop lights in Seven Fields

There is no excuse anymore to not come to a complete stop at the intersections along Castle Creek Drive and Highpointe Drive.

To reduce driver roll-throughs, the Seven Fields borough leadership installed solar-powered LED flashing stop signs at Cumberland Drive, Warrick Drive and Highpointe Drive intersections during the first week of February.

Borough manager Tom Smith said the added the flash LED traffic signs are intended to grab drivers' attention to the stop signs.

“We have received numerous complaints about people running the stop signs,” Smith said. “It was becoming too common.”

According to Smith, the borough council rendered its decision to add the stop signs after reading reports from multiple states such as Texas, Oregon and Michigan that indicated the LED traffic signs can reduce accidents by nearly 29%.

“They are effective,” Smith said. “They make motorist and drivers aware that you have to stop ahead.”

The eight LED stop signs, which include side blinders, cost $8,371.

The lights are only operational from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday.

“The council felt that they are in a residential area, and even if they have blinders on there, we didn’t want to interfere or impact people in the residential area,” Smith said.

Police Chief John Sicilia said the stop signs have been effective since they were installed earlier this month.

“There is no doubt that there’s a stop sign there,” Sicilia said. “You cannot say you did not see the drive signs. If you drive through one of those stop signs, it was intentional.”
