HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania's sixth modern-day elk season ended Saturday with the 40 licensees killing 33 elk.
Fourteen were antlered and 19 were antlerless, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Last year, the same number of licensees took 10 antlered and 25 antlerless elk.
John A. Shirk, of Goodville in Lancaster County, took the largest bull elk at 849 pounds on Nov. 6 in Clinton County. Sarah L. Campbell, of Landisburg in Perry County, took the largest antlerless elk at 559 pounds on Nov. 6 in Cameron County.
GREENVILLE — Mars graduate Ricky Gable, a senior offensive lineman at Thiel College, was named first-team All-Presidents' Athletic Conference.Teammate and running back Steve Minton, a Seneca Valley graduate, earned second-team honors. Butler graduate and junior Waynesburg linebacker Dan Andreassi was an honorable mention.
JEFFERSON TWP — Knoch running back Alex Whisler, linebacker Justin McGowan and defensive back Dan Pickard were named second-team All-Greater Allegheny Conference in football.Former Butler and Freeport coach Sam Albert, now at Highlands, was named conference coach of the year.
SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University volleyball coach Laurie Lokash was named PSACWest Coach of the Year.The Rock finished 31-9 overall and earned its fifth consecutive NCAAplayoff appearance under Lokash. SRUsenior Sarah Kirsch and sophomore Anastasia Urbanik earned first-team All-PSACWest honors.Rock sophomore Jen Blasko and junior Louise Schultz earned second-team honors.
