WPIAL hoop pairings released Monday

The WPIAL released its boys and girls basketball playoff pairings Monday with numerous county teams involved.

Here are their first-round pairings:

Boys

Class 6A

Feb. 23: Butler at Upper St. Clair, TBA

Class 5A

Feb. 19: Mars at Franklin Regional, 7 p.m.

Class 4A

Friday: Beaver at Knoch, 7 p.m.

Friday: Elizabeth Forward at North Catholic, 7 p.m.

Friday: Freeport at Lincoln Park, 7 p.m.

Friday: Summit Academy at Monessen, 7 p.m.

Girls

SRU’s Gilbert named top field athlete

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University senior Samantha Gilbert has been named the PSAC Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week.

Gilbert improved her season-best in the long jump to 5.63 meters at the SPIRE Indoor Games, moving her to No. 2 in the PSAC. She also took fourth in the 60 meters with a time of 7.67 seconds.
