Butler boys relays sweep at Youngstown State
All three Butler boys relay teams took first place Saturday, hitting state meet qualifying standards, at an indoor track and field meet hosted by Youngstown State University.
The 4x800 relay team of Zachary Slear, Ethan Thomas, Logan Rogers and Drew Griffith won in 8 minutes, 2.02 seconds, ranking second in the state. The 4x200 of Chris Rubcic, Landon Lacey, Kevin Shriver and David Graef won in 1:30.79, fifth in the state. The 4x400 of Rubcic, Griffin Bauer, Jacob Fallecker and Lacey won in 3:26.61, eighth in the state.
Graef ran the 60 meters in 7.16 seconds, third-fastest time in program history.
The Golden Tornado girls relays all finished second and hit state meet qualifying standards as well. The 4x800 of Ava Brewster, Makayla McLister, Lyla Bowden and Madi McGarrah ran a 9:59.52, the 4x200 of Jocie Slesinski, Aubrey Rock, Ari Morrow and Lauren Bowden ran a 1:47.88 and the 4x400 of Audrey Lehman, Adraya Baxter, McGarrah and Bowden ran a 4:09.22.
Brewster ran the 1,600 meters in 5:20.51, breaking Butler’s previous indoor record of 5:25.55 set by Maggie Welty.

Slippery Rock — The Rockets sent a small group of athletes to the Youngstown State meet. Dustin Joyce placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 42 feet, 4 inches and was sixth in the long jump at 19-11.25.
On the girls side, Samantha Montgomery was seventh in the triple jump at 31-1.50.
Swimming
Slippery Rock competed in the Southern Tier Invitational, the girls placing second with 411 points the boys sixth with 131. Titusville won the girls meet with 529 points, Franklin the boys meet with 431.
Mollie Massella won the 200-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly for the Rocket girls. Tessa Szymanski took second in the 200 individual medley and 500 free. Raely FaJohn won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle while Season Grant took fourth in the 50 free and third in the 100 free. Avery Grossman was fourth in the 100 breaststroke.
On the boys side, Cody Hartle took second in the 200 IM and third in the 100 breaststroke. Kevin Bowser was fourth in the 100 butterfly.
Slippery Rock’s girls 200 free relay of Grant, Maddy Gauselmann, Massella and FaJohn, along with the 400 free relay of Grant, Szymanski, Massella and FaJohn, won their events.
Boys Basketball
Luke Cramer scored 19 points and Taite Beighley added 12 Friday night in Karns City’s 51-39 win over Union. Karns City (15-6) took a six-point lead into the fourth quarter and limited the Golden Knights to five points in the final eight minutes.
Hayden Smith score 20 points and Dawson Camper 12 for Union.
The victory clinches the No. 3 seed in the upcoming KSAC Tournament for Karns City. The Gremlins end the regular season at A-C Valley on Tuesday night.
Girls Basketball
Alayna Rocco scored 16 points, but North Catholic dropped its regular season finale, 44-28, at unbeaten Oakland Catholic. The Trojanettes trailed 22-7 at halftime and 35-14 through three quarters.
Sharpsville 62, Union/A-C Valley 46 — Maddy Dehart scored 21 points for the Falcon Knights. Kya Wetzel added eight.
Macie Steiner paced Sharpsville with 26 points while Lily Palko added 12.
