ST. LOUIS — Michelle Kwan was given one more chance to chase that elusive Olympic gold. Now she has to prove she deserves it.
While Sasha Cohen earned her spot in Turin by winning the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Saturday night, Kwan needed an assist from a selection committee.
By a 20-3 vote, it gave the nine-time U.S. and five-time world champion a medical bye under the condition she proves by Jan. 27 that she's fully recovered from a groin injury and able to compete.
Cohen and Kimmie Meissner were givens after their 1-2 finish. But the committee took the better part of an hour to put Kwan ahead of third-place finisher Emily Hughes, who was designated an alternate along with Katy Taylor.
For the first time since 1976, the United States will send three newcomers to the men's Olympic event.
Johnny Weir won his third straight title on Saturday. Evan Lysacek won the free skate and finished second overall, ahead of Matt Savoie.
HONOLULU — David Toms' heart is just fine, and it sure wasn't under much stress at the Sony Open.With two quick birdies to seize control, Toms surged past Chad Campbell and never gave anyone else much hope Sunday at the Waialae Country Club, closing with a 5-under 65 for a five-shot victory over Chad Campbell and Rory Sabbatini.It was Toms' first victory since he was taken off the course on a stretcher at the 84 Lumber Classic four months ago with his heart racing at 255 beats per minute.It was the largest margin at Waialae since Paul Azinger won by seven in 2000.
MONTREAL — The Montreal Canadiens fired coach Claude Julien on Saturday, replacing him with general manager Bob Gainey.The Canadiens started 12-3 before winning just seven of their next 25 games.Assistant coach Rick Green was also fired and replaced by former captain Guy Carbonneau.
INDIANAPOLIS — Colts cornerback Nick Harper's wife told police she accidentally stabbed her husband while waving a filet knife at him during an argument, according to court documents.Daniell Harper, 31, remained Sunday night in the Hamilton County Jail, where she was being held without bond on preliminary charges of battery with a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness, both felonies.Nick Harper, 31, was treated at an Indianapolis hospital Saturday after deputies and paramedics found him with a puncture wound to his right knee, police said. He started in Sunday's playoff loss to Pittsburgh.
NEW YORK — The New York Jets interviewed Patriots defensive coordinator Eric Mangini on Sunday night for their vacant head coaching job.General manager Terry Bradway and assistant GM Mike Tannenbaum met with Mangini in the Foxborough, Mass., area. The two then returned to New York to prepare for their interview with former Vikings coach Mike Tice on Monday.
