Rooting for Tomlin to stay put

OK, so Mike Tomlin is not headed to USC or LSU and the college football world anytime soon.

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ coach made that abundantly clear during his weekly press conference a few days ago.

Tomlin stated that he has one of the best coaching jobs in professional sports and has no reason to want to give that up.

Though many among the Steelers’ fan base would love to watch Tomlin walk out the door — either voluntarily or by being kicked out — the Steeler ownership knows better.

This guy has been with the Steelers for 15 years. He’s never had a losing season. He’s been to two Super Bowls. His career record with Pittsburgh is 148-81-1, a .646 winning percentage.

In this age of free agency and salary caps, do you know how difficult it is to maintain the consistency Tomlin has done in Pittsburgh? The team has won 10 or more games in nine of his 15 seasons.

Tomlin’s had four 12-win seasons, one 13-win season. His playoff record is 8-8.

There’s the rub.

Only 8-8? Not good enough, right?

Wrong.

It’s the playoffs.

With very few exceptions, every team that makes the NFL playoffs is a good team. You can win or lose to anyone at any time. The key is getting there and taking your shot.

Tomlin’s teams do that for the most part.

Even when they don’t make the postseason, the guy keeps his team in the hunt until the very end.

The problem is, Steelers fans expect the Super Bowl every year. Don’t get there, you failed.

Any city with a pro sports franchise that was once a dynasty feels that way. Montreal feels that way about the Canadiens. Boston feels that way about the Celtics. New York feels that way about the Yankees. None of those teams has won it all in quite a while now.

There’s that feeling of entitlement. We dominated then, we should dominate now. It’s unrealistic.

Even the New England Patriots ... well, they may not win another Super Bowl anytime soon.

The Steelers are 3-3 right now. Flat out, I don’t believe they’re headed to the playoffs.

The other three teams in their division appear to be better than they are.

Yet the talk around town is all about the possibility and hope that the Steelers will find a way to get there.

Why?

Because Mike Tomlin is the head coach.

Get rid of this guy or hope he leaves on his own?

I think not.
