Freeport, Knoch, Mars learned Monday where their WPIAL football quarterfinal games will be played Friday.

Freeport will face South Fayette at Seneca Valley's NexTier Stadium in Class AA.

In Class AAA Knoch plays Central Valley at New Castle and Mars faces West Allegheny at North Allegheny.

All game times are at 7:30 p.m.

ADAMS TWP Mars High softball pitcher-third baseman Taylor Rotz was selected to compete in the Queen of Diamonds Showcase North Jan. 8 and 9 at Kent State University.More than 2,000 players from more than 30 states and two Canadian provinces applied for the event, with 264 being selected.Selections are based on ability, potential, academics, graduation year, coach's request and referrals.

SLIPPERY ROCK The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team earned a berth in the 2010 NCAA Division II tournament.The Rock (13-3-4) received the No. 3 seed in the Atlantic Region and will face No. 6 seed West Virginia Wesleyan Friday in a first-round match at California (Pa.) University.

MELBOURNE, Australia Tiger Woods arrived in Melbourne Monday to defend his Australian Masters title, a year after his visit to the city sparked reports of infidelity which damaged his career and tarnished his public image.Woods hasn't won a title since last year's Masters at Kingston Heath and last week lost the world No. 1 ranking he held for 281 weeks to England's Lee Westwood.Last year, the presence of a woman alleged to have been Woods' guest at his Melbourne hotel led to revelations of infidelities that derailed his professional life and ended his marriage to Elin Nordegren.

NEW YORK Late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner will be on the Hall of Fame veterans committee ballot next month with former New York manager Billy Martin.Steinbrenner owned the Yankees from 1973 until his death in July, and the team won seven World Series, 11 AL pennants and 16 AL East titles during his turbulent and blustery reign.Martin had five stints as Yankees manager under Steinbrenner, who fired him four times.Former union head Marvin Miller also will be on the ballot with players Vida Blue, Dave Concepcion, Steve Garvey, Ron Guidry, Tommy John, Al Oliver, Ted Simmons and Rusty Staub.Retired general manager Pat Gillick also is on the 12-man ballot.

TORONTO The Hockey Hall opened its doors to women for the first time Monday, with Canada's Angela James and Cammi Granato of the United States receiving their Hall of Fame rings.Both were inducted with former NHL star Dino Ciccarelli, builder Jim Devellano and the late Daryl “Doc” Seaman, one of the founders of the Calgary Flames.

GREEN BAY, Wis. The NFL fined Green Bay Packers safety Nick Collins $50,000 for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Roy Williams.In a statement Monday, league officials said Collins “violently and unnecessarily struck a defenseless receiver” in the neck and head area with his helmet during Sunday night's game and called it a “flagrant violation of player safety rules.”
