Police sniper kills northeastern Pa. man in standoff

MIDDLEBURG, Pa. — State police say a northeastern Pennsylvania man is dead this morning after being shot by a police sniper following a 14-hour standoff.

State police identified the man as 45-year-old Kayre Gene Snyder. Authorities say the sniper fired a single shot, killing Snyder about 4 a.m. today at his home in Middleburg, Snyder County.

Investigators say the standoff began Thursday afternoon. Three hostages Snyder was holding in the house were unhurt.

Police say Snyder was armed and had plenty of ammunition. When Snyder opened his front door, the officer shot and killed him.

Snyder County District Attorney Michael Piecuch says authorities did everything possible to resolve the standoff peacefully.
