Police officers enter Immaculate Conception Church in Washington, Pa., on Friday to attend the funeral for East Washington Police Officer John Dryer, who was shot and killed during a traffic stop Dec. 19. Police from throughout the state attended the funeral.

WASHINGTON, Pa — Thousands of mourners filled the streets of a southwestern Pennsylvania town to honor a slain police officer.

The Friday afternoon procession for East Washington police Officer Joseph David Dryer drew law enforcement officers from throughout the state and region. One family brought its pets to honor Dryer, a respected veterinarian in the community and a policeman part-time.

Dryer’s coffin was carried by a horse-drawn carriage.

Dryer was fatally shot Sunday night during a traffic stop on Interstate 70, about 30 miles southwest of Pittsburgh.

Investigators say Eli Franklin Myers III shot Dryer in the head and wounded a second officer after Myers was pulled over for expired tags. Myers was shot and killed by police in nearby Webster after a standoff that lasted about 10 hours.

Dryer’s funeral took place at Immaculate Conception Church in Washington. He will be buried at West Middletown Cemetery.
